What is the best dog food to feed my shihtzu?

My Shihtzu dog was sick for a while throwing up and not having an appetite. He lost some weight. He’s doing much better now. Now he’s only eating boild chicken or white meat. I know this is not enough. I was feeding him Canidae All Life Stages before. I am slowly transitioning him to eating it again, but he won’t have none of it. Can you give me some suggestions on what I should try and feed him? Something without animal by-products and something that will make him gain the weight back, Thanks you in advice.

Answer: I tried feeding our dogs the more expensive/premium foods after I learned more about dog nutrition, but they have done better on Nutro Natural Choice Lamb Meal & Rice Formula than on anything else. They also seemed to like the taste better and have a lot less gas than before on the other brands. The older dog was throwing up a lot on the other brands, but is now eating without being sick and playing once again. The younger ones seem quite healthy with shiny beautiful coats.

If you’re buying your food at Wal-Mart, you could try the Maxximum Lamb & Rice-it’s not a really good food, but it’s the best at that store. If your family has a CostCo membership, their Kirkland brand is good, but don’t make that let you believe that the Sam’s Club brand is edible, though-it’s NOT good food. Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover’s Soul is a good one that is reasonably priced, and Canidae is a great choice. Healthwise is another to look into (it’s what I would choose in the lower priced foods).

Best (healthy) food for a Silky Terrier Puppy?

Hi everyone!
With all the food recalls and learning so much more about dog food, my boyfriend and I want to change our puppy’s food. The breeder we got him from was feeding him Purina Puppy Chow, which we are not happy with! We want to change him to a different/better food but want to pick the best one. He is a healthy puppy with no known allergies, but he has dry skin and one of his ears doesn’t always stand up. We would also prefer to use dry food.
So if there are any vets out there who have a recommendation for the best food for him, I would really appreciate it!
